The eleven US federal holidays
Two holidays fall on the same date every year; the rest are defined as the "nth weekday" of a month, which shifts the actual date year to year. Both kinds are computed the same way this tool always has: fixed dates are a direct lookup, and nth-weekday holidays use the standard formula — find the month's first occurrence of the target weekday, then add whole weeks (or count backward from the month's last day for "last Monday of May"-style rules).
| Holiday | Rule |
|---|---|
| New Year's Day | 1 January (fixed) |
| Martin Luther King Jr. Day | 3rd Monday of January |
| Presidents' Day | 3rd Monday of February |
| Memorial Day | Last Monday of May |
| Juneteenth | 19 June (fixed) |
| Independence Day | 4 July (fixed) |
| Labor Day | 1st Monday of September |
| Columbus Day | 2nd Monday of October |
| Veterans Day | 11 November (fixed) |
| Thanksgiving | 4th Thursday of November |
| Christmas Day | 25 December (fixed) |
Worked example
Take Thanksgiving 2026: "4th Thursday of November." 1 November 2026 is a Sunday, so the month's first Thursday is 5 November. Adding three more weeks (7-day jumps, since we want the 4th occurrence) lands on 26 November 2026 — and that's exactly what this tool computes, the same way for any year you check.
Frequently asked questions
Which holidays does this include?
The eleven federal holidays observed across the United States: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day. It doesn't include state-only holidays (like Patriots' Day in Massachusetts), religious observances, or company-specific days off — those vary too much to list generically.
How is the countdown calculated?
Everything runs from your device's local date at midnight — fixed-date holidays (like 4 July) are simple calendar lookups, and "nth weekday" holidays (like Thanksgiving, the fourth Thursday of November, or Memorial Day, the last Monday of May) are computed with the same nth-weekday-of-month arithmetic every calendar library uses. If today itself is the holiday, it shows "Today" instead of "in 0 days."
Does this account for holidays observed on a different weekday when they fall on a weekend?
No — this shows each holiday's actual calendar date. Federal government offices follow a separate "in-lieu" rule (a holiday landing on Saturday is observed the preceding Friday; on Sunday, the following Monday), but that's a workplace policy, not the holiday's real date, and not every employer follows it the same way. If your office closes on the observed day rather than the actual date, check your own calendar for that shift.
Why isn't [some holiday] on this list?
This list covers the eleven holidays the US federal government observes nationwide — the closest thing to a universal US holiday calendar. Anything narrower (a single state's holiday, a religious or cultural observance, or a company's floating personal days) isn't included, since it wouldn't apply to most visitors the same way.
